Yaivinskaya GRES Demonstrates Stable Performance During the Spring Flood Season

In order to ensure a stable flow of flood waters through the hydraulic structure, prevent accidents, and ensure reliable and uninterrupted operation of the power plant, the branch has established a flood commission and implemented an appropriate action plan to manage the spring flood and rainfall floods.

For the duration of peak flood, the branch introduced round-the-clock monitoring over the hydraulic engineering structures (HES) on the Yaiva River (water intakes, drainage devices, etc.) and other facilities managed by the branch that may be affected by flood waters in order to ensure prompt response. Over the entire flood season, the branch monitored the inflow and water level in the upper and lower pools of the Yaiva River. The overall situation this year was much more predictable than last year. In 2021, peak flood fell on 6–7 May. On these days, the water level in the upper pool reached 131 m (while the permissible level is 132.8 m). As of today (25 May), the water level in the upper pool is 130.15 m. All three sector gates are currently shut and let 43.2 m3/sec through (the capacity of a sector gate is 1580 m3/sec). The water level in the lower pool is 126.3 m today. All levels have reached the summer values. The operating procedures of Yavinskaya GRES functions during the flood season have proved their worth in real-life conditions over the decades. Similar to any other time, the primary objective in this period is to ensure uninterrupted operation of all core assemblies and stable generation of electric power to supply consumers.

“We can officially declare that the flood season for Yaivinskaya GRES is over. “We have successfully coped with the high water season, Vitaly Kabaev, Chairman of the Flood Commission, Chief Engineer of Yavinskaya GRES Branch, sums up. All functions have duly implemented scheduled activities within their relevant areas of responsibility. The team’s concerted effort made it possible to go over the 2021 flood season without any deviations in equipment condition and operating modes from the statutory ones. However, we are continuously on high alert in case of heavy showers”.
